My research
My research focuses on the acquisition of phonological representations and the role they play in early speech perception and production. A substantial part of this research is carried out in the Baby Research Center in Nijmegen and is part of the research unit ‘grammar and cognition’ of the Center for Language and Speech. Learning words involves learning phonological representations, i.e. the sound structure of words in the mind.

Phonological representations mediate between the acoustic signal and meaning in speech perception and between meaning and the articulatory output in speech production.
Thus, phonological representations in the brain lay the foundation for successful communication.
Yet, the nature of phonological representations that are built up during language acquisition is far from clear.

pijlJorieke Tiems KNAW student assistent in the research project NEWSPEAK.

Het Programma Akademie-assistenten verleent subsidies aan faculteiten van Nederlandse uni­versiteiten om getalenteerde studenten de kans te bieden in de masterfase kennis te maken met hoogwaardig wetenschappelijk onderzoek en onderwijs. Het Programma stimuleert de be­trokkenheid van excellente studenten bij het wetenschappelijk onderzoek en wil de studenten in een vroeg stadium interesseren voor wetenschappelijk onderzoek en een wetenschappelijke loop­baan. De student ontvangt hiervoor een vergoeding. In plaats van niet-studiegerichte bij­banen krijgen gemotiveerde talentvolle studenten de kans om extra ervaring op te doen binnen het eigen vakgebied.

In het project NEWSPEAK werken studenten mee aan onderzoek van tekstbestanden uit de nieuwe media zoals SMS, chat en blogs. Ze leren teksten te gebruiken bij het onderzoek naar talige fenomenen en interessante ontwikkelingen in informatieoverdracht en communicatie. Het onderzoek kan uitmonden in de masterscriptie van de studenten. In NEWSPEAK wordt een meester-gezel relatie gecreëerd.

Nieke Roos will defend his PhD thesis ‘Laryngeal features in the historical phonology and morphology of Dutch’ on June 23, 2009.

Maja Ciumak started her project on the acquisition of Polish coronal fricatives in April 2009.

Erasmus Exchange ProgrammePaula took part in the Erasmus exchange program, taught at the Linguistics Department of Stockholm and visited the Stockholm babylab in March 2009.

From January 2009 Paula is project leader of VAMOS, a research project on language acquisition at the University of Tromsø . The research group was interviewed for the Norwegian News.

Nicole Altvater-Mackensen received the Frye Stipendium in December 2008.

Taalexperiment "Het achtste taalwonder" Ieder spreekt zijn eigen taal. Het is eigenlijk een godswonder dat we elkaar denken te snappen. We zijn allemaal talenwonders.
Begrijpen we zelf immers wel waarom we elkaar verstaan? De Radboud Universiteit en LUX presenteren acht taalwonderen: één groot taalexperiment dat toont hoe onze alledaagse taal werkt.
